About the Essay Contest

We welcome submissions from all high school students interested in engaging with legal concepts and practicing their analytical writing. Submissions are due on April 22nd, 2024 and must not exceed 1,000 words.

About the Topic

Artificial intelligence poses many opportunities and potential harms for humanity. Recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established that calls made with AI-generated voices will be flagged as “artificial” and therefore illegal under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. In what other areas should American lawmakers regulate this new technology? Additionally, what specific laws might be urgently relevant and in which areas? Cite relevant case law, legal papers, and other scholarly sources to support your analysis.

The winner, runner-up, and honorable mentions will be featured on our website. All participants will be invited to our Spring Symposium in May. The authors of the top essays will have the opportunity to present in front of an audience of Northwestern students and professors.
